Artist's Description

I love flower buds and newly-emerging flowers, and coneflowers are one of my favorites to photograph at this stage. This beauty was opening in my front yard and I wanted to isolate it and focus on the ray flowers as they are turn upward toward the sky, and on the very photogenic layers of bracts beneath the flower head. More about those bracts from the Flower Essence Society Web site:

"The most remarkable structure in the Echinacea is the mound of bracts surrounding the central disk florets, emerging from a nearly globular receptacle. These bracts are stiff, but not rigid. They bend to the touch, but do not lose their shape, and quickly return to their arrangement in the two interlocking Fibonacci spirals that characterize the central florets."

A close-up view reveals an insect on the right side of the stem, and possibly another right above it, as well as a small water droplet.

When my husband Rick and I bought our home in Massachusetts back in 1979, we fell in love with the beautiful wooded wetland behind the house, and over the years we have come to love it even more. We also love gardening and the original property was mostly lawn. Over time we updated the landscape many times, and recently we added a naturalistic woodland garden near the wetlands and more cultivated gardens in the front and side yards. I love photographing flowers, and many of my flower photos were taken in our yard or at three very special botanical gardens in New England: Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston,...
